Labels that pass inspection

A missing or wrong label is one of the easiest ways to fail an electrical inspection or have PG&E refuse to set a meter. These are the labels we make most often.

PG&E meter panels

Multi-meter panels and switchboards must mark each meter position with the unit, address or use it serves. See PG&E Greenbook Section 5.5, Meter Identification and Seals.

Solar, battery and generator disconnects

PG&E's disconnect switch requirements call for permanent labels in engraved phenolic, with capital letters at least 3/8" tall, such as UTILITY DISCONNECT SWITCH.

Disconnects and panelboards

The electrical code requires every disconnect to be marked with what it serves (NEC/CEC 110.22), and buildings with more than one service to identify each one (230.2).

Warning and hazard labels

Field-applied warnings must be permanently attached and can't be handwritten (NEC/CEC 110.21(B)).

Tip: many inspectors want labels screwed or riveted on, not just stuck. Add screw holes in step 2 to be safe.

Common questions

What's phenolic?

A tough layered plastic. The top layer is one color and the core is another, so when we engrave through the top, the letters show in the core color. It won't fade or peel like a printed sticker.

Adhesive or screw holes?

Every label comes with peel-and-stick adhesive. Add screw holes if your spec calls for mechanical fastening or the surface is textured, oily, or outdoors.

Which colors can I get?

Black, white, blue, red, yellow, and green, with white or black letters. Need something else? Put it in your notes and we'll check stock.

Will I see a proof?

Yes. We email a proof before engraving every spec job and any order over 10 labels.

How fast can I get them?

Standard orders ship in 7 business days. Rush ships in 3 for 50% more, and next-day ships the next business day for double.

Will these pass inspection?

Engraved phenolic is the material PG&E and most specs call for. Choose the letter height and mounting your spec asks for, or send us the spec and we'll match it. Your inspector has the final say.

Do you deliver locally?

Right now we ship everything. Local pickup may be possible for large Bay Area orders; ask when you call.
